Society...should conform to us!

Was having an interesting convo with someone regarding video games (again) and an interesting point came up.  Said person indicated that old video gamers should get used to the way video games are going, because now that they conform to everyone the businesses are better and more people can experience them.

When I was a kid, I was taught in school about the American Dream; what makes Western Civilization the free world versus countries like Russia, China, Korea, and the nations in the Middle East.  I was taught that the American Dream is our pursuit of happiness; to do what we want, whenever we want, to be able to make our own business, follow our dreams, and live our lives based on our choices rather than having someone else choose for you.  It gave meaning to the phrase "What do I want to be when I grow up?"

We should not, and I emphasize that, have to conform with what society wants us to do.  In today's world, we live in a land where if you want to succeed the best way to go is to make lots of money with very little effort.  If you don't succeed, then it's because you didn't grow up right, or you're in the wrong group of people, or you aren't considered part of a minority group that has been or is currently persecuted, or that you are simply in the wrong job.  Our suicide rate is exponential, we have more broken families with parents having shit jobs and coming home upset with nothing to live for, and with kids being raised to expect this kind of hardship as the norm.  We live in a world where if you're conservative you are automatically labeled as evil simply because you're part of a group that disagrees with certain minorities, and if you don't all but worship these minorities or the liberals who support them you can potentially get dragged down and made an outcast.  And people tell you that, if you aren't like them, you won't go anywhere in life.

I have made a personal philosophy about myself.  It's what got me into writing, it's what got me into gaming and wanting to make video games.  It's what got me so successful in my 3D animation class in college, and it's what pulled me out of the dirt in my worst moment of depression in my life.  That philosophy is this; if you want something done right, do it yourself.  So if you want things to go your way, you've got to do it yourself and not wait for someone's hand to come along and feed you.

If you have a dream, pursue it.  If you have a desire to accomplish something great, go for it.  It doesn't matter if you are a nerd in the bottom rung, or if you're on top with all you dreamed of but still want more.  If you want to fill that emptiness in your heart, if you want to see things change for the better, don't wait around for it to come to you.  Go out there and get it yourself.  Keep the American Dream going, because now it's our turn to make our parents proud, to turn this world around and become someone people can look up to.

Keep calm and dream on!
