ZA: Poe

Almost every sentient being has some kind of ghost story. Most are afraid of them; they are among the many creatures that go bump in the night. Others respect them, seeing them as avatars of the world beyond the veil of death. Even more use them for their own purpose, which can often lead to catastrophic results. There are many kinds of ghosts, but the most common among them are the Poes...

Poes are by far the very definition of a ghost, or a spirit of the dead; they appear only during the shadow of night, can pass through walls, and hate the living with a passion. Poes, while among the most common, are a special kind of ghost. It is believed that Poes are spirits of hatred born when a hateful soul emits such strong feelings that they are conjured, though it is where that hate stems from that makes them unique.

All poes are considered female. Long ago, during the time known as the Clan Wars, casualties erupted on all sides including those that weren't military. Many civilian casualties were among the dead, and most were either women with children, widows with nowhere to go, or young women who were the subject to rape and abuse before being slain. Their souls parted with one last look of hatred and pain upon the world, leaving them liable to corruption and, more importantly, damnation in the form of a walking dead, never to rest until another comes to free them.

Poes are among the more common sights in graveyards. While most of them are ancient, many are born of the more recently deceased. Female serial killers and homeless refugees are often the most likely to become these undead creatures.

A Poe is often described in many different ways, though the most common have some kind of robes covering their bodies. Almost all Poes carry a lantern in one hand as a physical weapon, and use said lantern either to bash foes or to confuse them while attempting to corrupt their souls. Poes love nothing more than to screw around with the minds of the living, so often they only attack when hostilities are at their greatest, all the while hoping to find kindred spirits amidst the living.
